Professional Sketches of the People Behind the Aerias AQS IAQ Resource Center

BJ Spanos
Managing Editor

BJ Spanos manages the Aerias IAQ Resource Center, as well as researches and develops content, including white papers on a variety of related topics.  She has written extensively about indoor air quality (IAQ) issues and analyzed industry trends for more than 10 years, including IAQ legislation, mold and risk management, productivity and IAQ, and allergies and asthma. She recently researched and authored a landmark publication, Mold: Cause, Effect and Response, on mold in construction for the Foundation of the Wall and Ceiling Industry and revised the publication for the Wallcoverings Association. She also served as editor of INVIRONMENT® Professional, a monthly newsletter (no longer published) that reported on news, trends, technologies, products and issues impacting indoor environments.

Mrs. Spanos spent six years working with the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), where she edited the Society's position paper and statement on Legionella and legionellosis and other technical and educational presentations. She co-authored Proclaiming the Truth, a hardbound history of the Society. In addition, she developed and implemented communications plans for the ASHRAE's biannual international meetings, co-sponsored conferences, and efforts to promote Society activities in developing high-profile industry standards.

During her more than 20 years experience as a professional writer and editor of technical, medical and scientific information, Mrs. Spanos has authored numerous technical articles and speeches, and has edited several books and periodicals. She is a graduate of the University of Maryland with a bachelor of science in Journalism - Science Communications.

 

Joseph Q. Jarvis, MD, MSPH
Health Content Reviewer

Dr. Joseph Q. Jarvis reviews all health-related content for Aerias. He also serves as an associate professor at the University of Nevada School of Medicine. Dr. Jarvis is Board Certified in public health/general preventive medicine, occupational medicine and family practice. He has been a private consultant in occupational, environmental, and public health since 1994, with a background as a state health officer, a medical officer for the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and a staff physician in the Occupational and Environmental Medicine Division of the National Jewish Center for Immunology and Respiratory Medicine.

Dr. Jarvis is a recognized expert in the area of occupational and environmental health and has given presentations on sick building syndrome; indoor air and human health; and building-related illnesses. Dr. Jarvis has special expertise in the health effects caused by indoor microbial contamination and has been directly involved in the evaluation of the health effects of mold contamination on the occupants of numerous public buildings throughout the country. In addition, Dr. Jarvis has more than 13 years of teaching experience in occupational medicine and public health.

Dr. Jarvis received both his MD and MSPH from the University of Utah School of Medicine, and his BA in English from Brigham Young University. He is a member of the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine; the American Public Health Association; the American Academy of Family Practice; and the Utah Medical Association and has also lectured and published extensively. Dr. Jarvis stays abreast of current information in indoor air quality by attending such conferences as the Sick Building Litigation Conference in 1999.
